Nature was carefully created to support life. Everything contained in Mother Nature is uniquely beautiful. Nature provides us with beautiful flowers, attractive birds, animals, green plants, the sky, water bodies, and so much more.
God created nature so that we could appreciate the work of His creation. All things that we use are assets of Mother Nature so we should strive to preserve them.
Growing up together with my siblings, my mother often used to take us for camping trips over the holidays. We camped in the woods, at parks, and we also once had the opportunity to go for a camping vacation on an island.
Every time we went for camping holidays, my mother took her time to teach us various activities such as identifying different plants which she said would help us in our adulthood. She exposed us to Mother Nature and taught us so many things about it. Most importantly, she taught us to take care of nature and to respect everything in it.
Every time we went outdoors, I always ensured to carry my camera. I took a lot of photos that I pinned on the wall of my room. Every photo that I took in the outdoors was a true reflection of the beauty of the nature.
I recall a camping trip at the coast that turned around my life to become what I am today. We had travelled for a short vacation in a coastal town during one of the holidays when I was in high school.
Instead of joining my siblings in kayaking and snorkeling, I decided to take a solo route and engage in wildlife photography along the shoreline. As I was walking along the shoreline, I came across a group of turtles. They looked beautiful huddled together and I decided to take several photos.
When we went back home, instead of pinning the turtle’s photos on the wall, I uploaded them on the internet. The photos received so many positive remarks which excited me. Some of the people commenting on the pictures encouraged me to consider a course in photojournalism.
Such comments prompted me to research on photojournalism. Taking care of the environment has always been part of me but I had never thought of a career in journalism before.
After my research, I came to realize that journalism can be equally thrilling to nature enthusiasts. Nature journalism plays a vital role in communicating important environmental issues to and creating awareness about nature to the public.
This incident helped me learn a lot about nature journalism which I later decided to pursue as a career. I realized that I would have the opportunity to work for big institutions such as NGOs, magazines and websites. Most of all I wanted to one day have my own blog. This blog would enable me to share my personal wildlife encounters.
There are several routes of venturing into wildlife journalism. Having a background in environmental science is an added advantage because it creates a sense of authority to the work of a nature journalist.
When I joined college, I decided to pursue a degree in marine biology and then later venture into photojournalism. This career has helped me travel all over the world.
